In late February 2011, history was made with the first-ever Ontario-Québec Economic Forum held in downtown Toronto. Ontario’s Economic Development and Trade Minister, Sandra Pupatello, and Québec’s Economic Development, Innovation and Exports Minister, Clément Gignac, attended as well as 150 leaders from both provinces’ business, post-secondary and not-for-profit sectors.
Themes discussed at the one-day Forum included: addressing the Ontario-Québec productivity gap; encouraging businesses to better leverage new technologies; co-operating innovation corridors; and fostering talent through education.
“To compete internationally, we have to collaborate nationally.” (Len Crispino, President & CEO, Ontario Chamber of Commerce)
“Today, we have brought the best and brightest to discuss the issues we have in common and our shared challenges.” (Françoise Bertrand, President& CEO, Fédération des chambres de commerce du Québec)
“If foreign investment goes to either Montreal or Toronto instead of Boston or Silicon Valley, it’s a win for both Ontario and Québec.” (Minister of Economic Development, Innovation & Export Trade, Clément Gignac)
“We really should be asking ourselves: are we creating a unique, sophisticated product or service in comparison to what our competitors are providing?” (Roger Martin, Dean, Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto)
“The Toronto-Montreal Corridor is of particular importance for our two provinces’ creative industries.” (Minister of Economic Development & Trade, Sandra Pupatello)
“Productivity is not strictly about economics.
It’s about constantly searching for new ideas, improving old processes, creating new products, and fostering a change in culture. Research in Motion’s Jim Balsillie understands this; Nokia and Apple understand this as well.” (Pierre Fortin, Professor of Economics, Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM)
