Ontario: A World Leader in Clean Technologies

The clean technology sector includes companies that are developing ways to use existing resources more effectively as well as those who are creating new, more sustainable, sources of energy and materials. The sector includes wind, solar, water and biomass and Ontario’s Smart Grid strategy.

Our ministry has the expertise innovation and leadership to help your business profit from this emerging industry.

THE VISION FOR CLEAN TECHNOLOGY IN ONTARIO

Global investment in clean energy reached an all-time high in 2010 of $243 billion, a 30% increase from 2009. Here in Canada, the clean tech sector grew at a CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of 47% during the worst recession in recent history.

The ministry works with these stakeholders to develop and implement strategies to support the long-term growth and development of companies across the industry.

Here’s what’s in the pipeline now to grow this sector:

  • A large scale “validation centre” with industry, academic and municipal partners to demonstrate the real-life implementation of water technologies on a community-wide scale.
  • Leveraging the province’s buying power to position Ontario as a clean tech test-bed and demonstration hub for the North American market. We want to be the test-bed and the first customer for new innovations.
  • Optimizing research to support energy content and ease of transportation for wood pellets to increase our use of biomass while supporting Ontario’s export competitiveness.
  • Actively participating in Eco-Finance activities, such as Verdexchange, bringing together industry and financial experts to improve access to capital for Ontario’s clean tech companies.

Ontario's Green Energy Act

We understand businesses need to know the details of Ontario’s Green Energy Act to tap into the strong incentives for investment in renewable energy projects and that supports the growth of clean technologies and renewable energy sources.

  • Approximately 1,800 MW of wind, solar and bio-energy projects have
.. reached commercial operation in Ontario. This represents more than
...$5 billion of investment and over 7,000 direct and indirect temporary
    .. and permanent jobs.

  • Ontario’s target for clean, renewable energy from wind, solar and
    .. bio-energy is 10,700 MW by 2018 (excluding hydroelectric) –
.. accommodated through transmission expansion and maximizing the
.. use of the existing system.

  • To date, 20,000 jobs have been created through Ontario’s Green Energy Act.

Access the Ministry of Energy’s Renewable Energy Facilitation Office, a one-window access point to assist renewable energy project proponents (developers, communities and municipalities) providing information to help bring their projects to life.
