Ontario Supports Gaming Industry, Creates 205 New Jobs: McGuinty Government Helps Global Firm Establish Local Production Studio

Ontario is helping Gameloft Inc — a leading international publisher and developer of downloadable video games — open a new state-of-the-art digital gaming studio in Toronto which will create up to 205 jobs.
With the province’s support, Gameloft’s new Toronto facility will help expand the company’s lead position in one of the fastest growing and most innovative areas of the digital video gaming industry. With 300 games already available through over 700 different cell phone service providers, the company will continue to create digital games designed specifically for smartphones and mobile devices such as iPhones, iPad, smartphones as well as social networks like Facebook.
Partnering with business is a key component of the McGuinty Government’s plan to create and support jobs for Ontario families and strengthen local economies.

- Gameloft Canada, a subsidiary of France’s Gameloft S.A., has established partnerships with leading licensors including UNO, Ferrari, Shrek, CSI, Spiderman and Iron Man.
- Ontario’s Interactive Digital Media Tax Credit is attracting businesses to the province. These tax credits were an important factor to Gameloft’s decision to locate in Ontario.
- In June, Ontario had an increase of more than 40,000 jobs and the unemployment rate declined to 7.7 percent.
- In 2010, Ontario was named a top destination for foreign direct investment in North America, second only to California. The province attracted a total of 127 Foreign Direct Investment projects which created more than 11,200 jobs.
