Ontario Helps Local Glass Company Create Jobs: McGuinty Government Supports Manufacturing Sector In Brampton

NEWS

Ontario is helping Owens-Illinois Inc. (O-I) — a Brampton-based glass manufacturer — create 20 new jobs and protect 314 existing jobs.

With the province’s support O-I is adding a new packaging line and equipment upgrades to their Brampton facility.  This will help provide more sizes, style and colour of glass bottles produced, helping them broaden their market and meet demand.  The company will also update their furnaces to increase energy efficiency at the Brampton plant.

Partnering with local businesses and supporting the manufacturing sector are key components of the McGuinty government’s plan to create and protect jobs for Ontario families and strengthen local economies.

QUOTES

"Today's announcement is good news for the employees and suppliers of O-I Canada's Brampton plant and is also a terrific vote of confidence for the City of Brampton as a place for businesses to grow."
― Linda Jeffrey, MPP Brampton Springdale

“As Ontario’s economy continues to turn the corner, our government will continue working as a proactive partner to promote business growth and job creation.  This investment will enable
O-I’s Brampton plant to win new customers and play an increasing role in the company’s North American operations.”
― Sandra Pupatello, Minister of Economic Development and Trade

“Today is really about a partnership and mutual commitment between our company and the people of Ontario to a vibrant future for glass packaging in Ontario – a partnership of which we at O-I are very proud to be part.”
― Ryan Modlin, Vice President of Government Affairs, O-I North America

QUICK FACTS

  • O-I is contributing to LCBO and industry efforts to increase the supply of lightweight glass packaging, which offers environmental and workplace health and safety advantages.
  • Glass packaging is endlessly recyclable and made from all-natural raw materials – sand, limestone and soda ash – plus recycled glass, which is called cullet.
  • In 2010, Ontario was named a top destination for foreign direct investment in North America, second only to California. The province attracted a total of 127 Foreign Direct Investment projects, which created more than 11,200 jobs.
  • As a result of the tax changes in Ontario, taxes on new business investment were cut in half, making Ontario more competitive and encouraging businesses growth.
