Summary of Proposal:
The amendments will clarify application of Fire Code requirements for school based licensed child care programs for school-aged children, assisting both licensed child care operators with Fire Code compliance and municipal fire services with Fire Code enforcement.

The proposed amendments to the Fire Code (see attached Code Change Sheets) will consist of:

- Clarifying that fire safety requirements for day care centres under Section 2.10 of the Fire Code do not apply to licensed child care programs that are located in a school and that are intended for children who are at least four years of age or older;

- Requiring fire drills for schools during summer terms, as applicable; and

- Aligning the fire drill frequency of licensed child care centres located in schools and intended for children who are at least four years of age or older with that of the school in which they are based, and clarifying that the fire drill must take place during their hours of operation.

Public consultation is part of the process for amending the Fire Code. The Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services welcomes your comments and feedback on this proposal.
