Five-Year Review of the Retirement Homes Act, 2010 - Consultation Paper

Regulation Number(s):
166/11
Instrument Type:
Act
Bill or Act:
Retirement Homes Act, 2010
Summary of Proposal:
The Government of Ontario introduced the Retirement Homes Act (Act) in 2010, marking the first time in Ontario's history that seniors living in retirement homes have strong protections under provincial law. The Act and its regulations establish mandatory care, safety and administrative standards for retirement homes.

The Act also creates the Retirement Homes Regulatory Authority with the power and obligation to enforce the Act, including licensing homes and conducting inspections and investigations.

The legislation requires the Minister to undertake a review of the Act within five years, and present a report of the findings to the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly.

A consultation guide to solicit feedback and focus discussions has been posted on the Ontario Seniors' Secretariat's website, at www.seniors.gov.on.ca/en/homecommunity/rha_consultation.php.

The government welcomes your input. Any comments that are out of scope of this consultation may be shared with other ministries or agencies responsible or considered as part of other future initiatives.
