Posting Date:

Summary of Proposal:
The proposal is to adopt a new version of Ontario's Building Code (the 2006 Building Code). The new Code will be written in an objective-based format, meaning that it will retain the existing prescriptive requirements but will provide for performance-based compliance through the inclusion of objectives for all technical provisions. This blend of prescriptive and performance-based requirements assures certainty and continuity but will also allow for more flexibility and innovation in design and construction.

The new Building Code will also contain over 700 new technical provisions. Among these new provisions will be requirements dealing with energy efficiency of buildings, care occupancies, barrier-free accessibility and small-scale residential construction.

The adoption of a new version of the Building Code in an objective-based format and with the proposed technical changes will increase the level of harmonization between Ontario's Code and the model National Building Code and will also reflect Ontario's public policy objectives.
