O. Reg. 293/16 (Council Composition - Regional Municipality of Durham) made under the Municipal Act, 2001 came into force on August 15, 2016.

O. Reg. 293/16 enables the Regional Municipality Durham to exercise its power under section 218 of the Act to change the size of its council by:

(a) increasing the number of members from the Town of Ajax from three to four;

(b) increasing the number of members from the Town of Whitby from four to five; and

(c) decreasing the number of members from the City of Oshawa from eight to six.

Summary of Proposal:
The Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing is proposing to make the following regulation under the Municipal Act, 2001.

Proposed Regulation:

The proposed regulation would authorize The Regional Municipality of Durham to exercise its power under the Municipal Act, 2001 to pass a by-law to change the composition of regional council.

Specifically, the regulation would authorize the Region to exercise its power to pass a by-law to change the composition of its council by reducing the number of members representing the City of Oshawa by two, while adding one member representing the Town of Ajax and one member representing the Town of Whitby, which would maintain the size of regional council at 29 members, inclusive of the regional chair.
