Summary of Proposal:
ServiceOntario is proposing an amendment to O. Reg 442/95 under the Business Regulation Reform Act, 1994 to amend the regulation to require that businesses provide their Business Number when asked to do so by any Ontario government program that interacts with businesses.
The Business Regulation Reform Act, 1994 (BRRA) provides the legal framework for the adoption of the federal Business Number. Cabinet adopted the Business Number policy in 2006 based on the Canada Revenue Agency's federal business number. The use of this common business number improves the sharing of other business information between the Government of Canada, the Minister of Government and Consumer Services, other Ministries and municipalities, and does so in accordance with federal and provincial law.
The Single Business Number is issued by the Government of Canada. It is recognized in most provincial/territorial jurisdictions and can be used across orders of government. This in turn allows business to use a single number to uniquely identify themselves when dealing with government, thereby saving business time and making it easier to comply with government regulations.
All interested parties are encouraged to provide feedback on the proposed regulations by July 26, 2016.
