Posting Date:

Summary of Proposal:
The government is proposing a package of interim changes to the Building Code. The proposed changes are intended to support business and promote a greener Ontario.

Many of the proposed changes are clarifications or housekeeping in nature. The proposed changes also include prescriptive equivalent requirements to the EnerGuide 80 energy efficiency requirements; and a reduction in the minimum height of septic tanks, from 1200 mm to 1000 mm. The prescriptive equivalent to EnerGuide 80 would provide home designers and builders with the choice of a variety of prescriptive alternatives to Natural Resources Canada’s performance-based EnerGuide 80 standard, which is currently referenced in the Code, while maintaining or exceeding its level of energy efficiency. The new energy efficiency requirements would apply to houses - residential buildings covered by part 9 of the Code. The reduction in minimum septic height depth would increase the flexibility in design choices.

The Ministry in currently undertaking a consultation to seek public input regarding the content of these potential changes. See the Building Code website: www.ontario.ca/buildingcode
