Summary of Proposal:
The Ontario Tender Fruit Producers’ Marketing Board (OTFMB) currently has regulated marketing authority for sweet and sour cherries for processing, and peaches, pears, plums, and prunes for both the fresh market and processing. In summer 2009, the OTFMB approached the Ontario Farm Products Marketing Commission (Commission) about adding nectarines to their authorities. The OTFMB believes that the inclusion of nectarines under its marketing authorities will bring some much needed market stability to nectarine producers, as well as to ensure that appropriate promotion and research will be done.
The proposed regulatory amendments would see the addition of fresh nectarines to the Boards’ authorities under Regulation 433 (Tender Fruit – Marketing) and Regulation 434 (Tender Fruit – Plan) of the Farm Products Marketing Act.
The Ontario Farm Products Marketing Commission recommends this regulatory amendment after conducting an Expression of Opinion vote among fresh nectarine growers.
