Summary of Decision:
The Ministry of the Solicitor General has made a minister's regulation amendment to temporarily increase provincial rates paid to service providers for the transportation of deceased persons as part of a coroner's investigation.
The amendment will be effective from August 25, 2022 to March 31, 2023.

Summary of Proposal:
The transportation of deceased persons as part of a coroner's investigation is an essential frontline service provided by funeral establishments and transfer service operators licensed under the Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002.
The Province pays these service providers according to the fee schedule set out under Schedule 4 of O. Reg 19/15 of the Coroners Act. The schedule was prescribed in 2019 and its fees increase by 2% per year until April 1, 2023.
The Ministry of the Solicitor General intends to make a minister's regulation amendment to increase provincial rates to offset increased body transportation costs incurred by licensed funeral establishments and transfer service operators. Schedule 4 of O. Reg 19/15 would be amended to provide that, on a go forward basis, the fee for two attendants transporting a dead body for further investigation on the authorization of the coroner would be:
• A flat fee of $420.01, or
• A rate of $3.45 per kilometre in southern Ontario and $3.53 per kilometre in northern Ontario.
This would provide an additional $1.00 per km or an additional $120 per flat rate in response to the impact of rising gas prices on the cost of operations for service providers.
The new fee schedule would be in effect until March 31, 2023.
