Summary of Proposal:
The proposal consists of the following changes to the current wine standards rules:
• Adding the Marquette hybrid grape variety to the list of permitted grapes used for wine produced in Ontario and eligible for Vintners Quality Alliance Ontario approval;
and
• Declaring the vintage date on the Vintners Quality Alliance label would be optional for table wines labelled with the "Ontario" geographical indication.
Background:
New Grape Variety:
• Ontario Regulation 406/00 identifies a specific list of grape varieties authorized for the production of Vintners Quality Alliance wines.
• In accordance with its evaluation policy for new grape varieties, Vintners Quality Alliance Ontario found that Marquette can produce wines meeting the expected quality standards reflected in the current list of eligible varieties.
• The proposed change would allow Marquette grapes to be used in varietal designated wines labelled with the origin "Ontario". It would not be permitted in any wine labelled with a viticultural area, sub-appellation or a named vineyard. All other applicable Vintners Quality Alliance Ontario rules would apply.
Non-Vintage Dated Table Wines:
• Ontario Regulation 406/00 currently requires all wines except Sparkling and Fortified wines to be composed of at least 85% grapes from of a single vintage and labelled with that vintage date.
• The proposed change would permit the composition of table wines to be from a blend of vintages.
• The winery would have discretion to use a vintage date, however omitting the vintage date would be permitted only for table wines labelled with the origin "Ontario".
