Regulation Number(s):
s.79.3
Instrument Type:
Act
Bill or Act:
Protect Ontario Through Safer Streets and Stronger Communities Act
Summary of Proposal:
Auto theft involving keyless entry systems has become increasingly prevalent. These devices are being exploited to steal cars, prompting a need for stricter regulations and measures to prevent their misuse. Sophisticated techniques are used to execute the vehicle theft operation swiftly without the need for physical access to the key fob.

There are a variety of devices used to access and steal a vehicle, including devices that intercept, copy, relay, and transfer remote key signals.

The objective is to enable law enforcement to remove auto theft devices from suspicious activity related to auto theft and fraud.

This proposal aims to reduce auto theft rates and protect vehicle owners from financial losses associated with stolen vehicles by providing law enforcement with an additional tool to combat these activities and address the prevalence of these devices.
Analysis of Regulatory Impact:
The Regulatory Impact Analysis (RIA) has been initiated but not yet completed. Feedback received from the RIA process will be responded to, as appropriate.
