College Introduction

In Ontario, the Drug and Pharmacies Regulation Act (DPRA) provides the Ontario College of Pharmacists (OCP) the authority to govern community pharmacies. Under the DPRA, the OCP has the authority to make regulations, subject to the approval of the Lieutenant Governor in Council, on certain matters relating to the governance of community pharmacies.

Summary of Proposal

On December 11, 2014, the Safeguarding Health Care Integrity Act, 2014 (Act) received royal assent. Schedule 2 of the Act extends the OCP's authority to license and inspect pharmacies within public and private hospitals. Schedule 2 of the Act will come into force on a day to be named by proclamation of the Lieutenant Governor.

In preparation for when Schedule 2 comes into force, the OCP is proposing to amend O.Reg. 58/11 (General) under the DPRA to add greater flexibility to allow for the regulation of both hospital and community pharmacies, in addition to making other amendments that are intended to streamline requirements.
