Consultation on Disposition of Surplus School Property

Regulation Number(s):
Ontario Regulation 444/98 - Disposition of Surplus Real Property
Instrument Type:
Regulation - Minister
Bill or Act:
Education Act
Summary of Proposal:
This consultation will assist the ministry to respond to issues concerning surplus school property disposition that were highlighted in the Premier's Community Hub Framework Advisory Group's report, Community Hubs in Ontario: A Strategic Framework & Action Plan.

The purpose of the proposed changes is to promote the effectiveness of O. Reg. 444/98 in;
• keeping surplus school board properties within the public sphere where there is a need and a financially viable proposal, with priority given to the publicly-funded education system; and
• co-ordinating school board surplus property management processes with those of other public and community entities.

The ministry is focusing its public consultation via the Regulatory Registry on the following two proposed reforms:
1. Extending the property circulation period; and
2. Expanding the list of public entities to receive notification of surplus property disposition.

In addition to feedback on these two proposed reforms, the ministry would like to hear your ideas about other possible reforms that would support its policy aims of keeping surplus school board properties within the public sphere and better coordination of public surplus property management processes.

Please find attached the consultation feedback form to assist you in submitting your comments and ideas.

You may submit your feedback and comments either through the body of your e-mail to or by attaching the completed feedback form.
