Proposal to exempt projects in provincial parks and conservation reserves from the Environmental Assessment Act
Bill or Act:
Environmental Assessment Act
Summary of Proposal:
The Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks is proposing an exemption regulation under the Environmental Assessment Act (EAA) for all projects by or on behalf of the ministry in provincial parks and conservation reserves.
This includes: managing existing parks or conservation reserves; fish and wildlife management; land management; building or structures including infrastructure; campgrounds and day use facilities; and, water and shoreline works. Currently under the EAA, the ministry must consider the environmental assessment impacts of projects carried out in provincial parks and conservation reserves pursuant to the Class Environmental Assessment for Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves. The Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves Act (PPCRA) already provides environmental protection for Ontario's protected areas. By removing the requirements under the EAA, the PPCRA and associated policies would be the primary source of guidance and evaluation for projects in provincial parks and conservation reserves.
