Proposal to amend the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, 1997 to improve premium payment process

Regulation Number(s):
NA
Instrument Type:
Act
Bill or Act:
Bill
Summary of Proposal:
The Ministry is proposing amendments to the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, 1997 to allow the WSIB to enter into contracts or agreements with any person or entity, such as the CRA, for the purposes of administering certain provisions of the Act, including accepting Schedule 1 employer premium payments on the WSIB's behalf through a "one-window" approach. The proposed amendments would enable the WSIB to enter into an agreement with any person or entity for the purpose of administering Part VII (Employers and their Obligations) of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, 1997.
Analysis of Regulatory Impact:
The proposed amendments to the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, 1997 would result in no new or incremental direct compliance costs.

Positive impacts include enabling WSIB collaboration with other government agencies (i.e. the CRA) that will make it easier for business to interact with government entities. Employers paying WSIB premiums would only remit payments to one government entity, paying their premiums conveniently through the CRA at the same time they make payments for other payroll purposes such as CPP and EI. This would reduce red tape on businesses and administrative burden on employers, making it easier and more convenient to make WSIB premium payments.
