Summary of Proposal:
The regulation change has amended Ontario Regulation (O. Reg.) 667/98 (Trapping) to add to the list of allowable traps two non-killing raccoon traps (the Duffer’s Racoon Trap and the Lil’ Grizz Get’rz) that were recently certified by the Fur Institute of Canada as meeting the requirements of the Agreement on International Humane Trapping Standards (AIHTS).

The regulation change will allow licensed trappers using commercially-manufactured body-gripping traps to use the two additional traps when trapping raccoons.

The regulation change will help to ensure that Ontario trappers have access to the full range of approved traps consistent with the Agreement on International Humane Trapping Standards (AIHTS) continued market for Ontario fur products in the European Union, and that humane, safe, and effective trapping methods as determined under the AIHTS are used in Ontario.

There have been two previous amending regulations to the Schedule:

O. Reg. 341/09 which came into effect on September 21, 2009 added 10 additional traps to the schedule.
O. Reg. 300/08 which came into effect on August 19, 2008 added 12 additional traps to the schedule and amended the conditions for use for two additional traps.

O. Reg. 155/10 amending O. Reg. 667/98 under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act has been filed with the Registrar of Regulations on April 30, 2010 and will come into effect on July 1, 2010. O. Reg. 155/10 was published in the May 15, 2010 edition of the Ontario Gazette.
