Summary of Proposal:
Strawberry Island lies immediately east of Little Current on Manitoulin Island. The majority of the island was purchased by the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) on April 30, 2002. In 2008, this land was transferred to MNR to be established and managed as a provincial park (nature reserve class). The island is 1,145 hectares in size and contains provincially significant wetlands and regionally significant alvar habitats. Three small parcels will not be included in the recommended provincial park; two of which remain private land and one that is federal land.
Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother M'Nidoo M'Nissing is located at the western end of Manitoulin Island on the southern shore, with extensive frontage on Lake Huron. It is being recommended as a "natural environment" class park. The past landowner sold these private lands to the NCC in 1999, in partnership with the Ontario government. Unopened Crown road and shoreline allowances are proposed as an addition to the park, and once regulated, will be managed as part of the park. There are three existing roads not recommended for inclusion within the park.
The total area of the recommended provincial park will be 6,509 hectares in size. Provincially significant plants and limestone alvars will be protected within the new provincial park.
Misery Bay Provincial Nature Reserve is a 760 hectare nature reserve class park on the southern shore of Manitoulin Island that was established in 1989. The Federation of Ontario Naturalists (now Ontario Nature) recognized its significant earth and life science features including limestone alvars, wetland areas, and rare plant species, and deemed it an important natural area in 1974. This proposed 251 hectare park addition is comprised of lands that were acquired by MNR, as well as those that were donated to the Nature Conservancy of Canada. The acquired lands add to the ecological integrity of the park's wetland and alvar communities.
If the proposed minor land use amendment is approved, a subsequent regulation change will be made to Ontario Regulation 316/07 under the Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves Act, 2006.
Subsequent regulation changes will also be made to Ontario Regulation 665/98 under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, 1997 to allow hunting to continue on lands regulated as Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother M'Nidoo M'Nissing Provincial Park.
No additional opportunity for public comment on the regulation changes will be provided via the Environmental Registry.
