Regulation Number(s):
Instrument Type:
Regulation - LGIC
Bill or Act:
Ontario Forest Tenure Modernization Act, 2011
Summary of Proposal:
The OFTMA came into force on June 1, 2011. The act enables the province to establish Ontario local forest management corporations, up to two in the first five years, by regulation under section 3 of the Act.

LFMCs are Crown agencies that will be governed by a locally based board of directors, and will be responsible for managing Crown forests and overseeing the marketing and sale of Crown forest resources. Under the OFTMA, the objects of LFMCs are to:

- hold forest resource licences and manage Crown forests to provide for the sustainability of Crown forests in accordance with the Crown Forest Sustainability Act, 1994 and to promote the sustainability of Crown forests;
- provide for economic development opportunities for aboriginal peoples;
- become a self-sustaining business entity and to optimize the value from Crown forest resources while recognizing the importance of local economic development; and,
- market, sell and enable access to a predictable and competitively priced supply of Crown forest resources.

The proposed regulation would establish the first LFMC as a corporation without share capital. The LFMC would manage the Crown forests in an area that may include the Big Pic, Nagagami and White River Forests.
