Land use amendment to establish Carden Alvar as a recommended provincial park

Regulation Number(s):
316/07
Instrument Type:
Regulation - LGIC
Bill or Act:
Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves Act, 2006
Summary of Proposal:
Carden Alvar is a proposed natural environment class provincial park 1,917 ha in size. It is situated 29 km east of Orillia in the geographic Township of Carden, City of Kawartha Lakes near Orillia. This proposed provincial park is located within Ecodistrict 6E-9 (Madoc). The proposed park is situated on the Carden Plain, an expanse of limestone bedrock that supports some of the highest quality alvar habitat in the world. Alvars are globally rare habitats featuring areas of flat exposed limestone or marble rock with shallow soil. These unique landscapes occur only in the eastern European Baltic region and Ontario?s Great Lakes Basin. The recommended provincial park will protect at least nine types of globally significant alvar communities.

A Crown land use amendment is being proposed to designate this property as a recommended provincial park.

If the proposed land use amendment is approved, a subsequent regulation amendment will be made to Ontario Regulation 316/07 under the Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves Act, 2006 in order to establish Carden Alvar as a regulated natural environment class provincial park. No additional opportunity for public comment on the regulation will be provided via the Environmental Registry.
