Summary of Proposal:
The newest edition of Canadian Standards Association (CSA) standard D250 has been published and will be adopted automatically through Regulation 612 on June 1, 2013.

For the first time, the updated standard will include requirements for accessible school buses. Until now, requirements related to accessibility equipment were included in a different CSA standard (CSA D409, Motor Vehicles for the Transportation of Persons with Physical Disabilities).

MTO is proposing to move accessible school bus requirements, currently found in Regulation 629 to Regulation 612. This will consolidate all requirements related to school buses into one regulation, making it easier for operators, manufacturers and dealers to identify their responsibilities.

The requirement for existing accessible school buses to comply with CSA D409-84 will remain the same. New accessible school buses manufactured on or after June 1, 2013 will be exempt from CSA D409-84, and will be required to comply with the new and more modern requirements of the updated CSA D250 standard, including those related to accessibility.
