College Introduction
In Ontario, the regulation of health professions is based on a self-governance model. There are 25 health regulatory colleges governing 27 health professions under the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 and their respective health profession Acts.
Under the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 (RHPA) and the Psychology Act, 1991, the College of Psychologists of Ontario (CPO) is responsible for governing the self-regulating profession of psychology in Ontario.
Under these Acts, the CPO may make regulations on a variety of subject matters, including quality assurance (QA), subject to the prior review by the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care and the approval of the Lieutenant Governor in Council.
Summary
The CPO has amended its QA provisions of its General Regulation under the Psychology Act, 1991 which would, among other things:
• Allow members to be selected for peer and practice assessment by stratified random sampling.
• Expands the scope of the continuing education and professional development requirement
• Update the QA regulation to ensure that the QA program is consistent with new requirements in the Health Professions Procedural Code (Code), which is Schedule 2 to the RHPA.
• Remove provisions which are not authorized by the Code.
