Regulation Number(s):
N/A
Instrument Type:
Regulation - LGIC
Bill or Act:
Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002
Summary of Proposal:
The primary objective of the new act and regulations is to offer modernized protections and greater transparency to consumers, while at the same time creating a more level playing field for bereavement sector participants under one streamlined legislative framework.

There are four regulations under the new act and two under property tax related legislation. The regulations include rules around operating a bereavement business, consumer protection requirements, price list and pricing requirements, care and maintenance funds, and specific rules related to cemeteries, burial sites and crematoriums.

The two property tax related regulations reflect the property tax policy as set out in the new act, the Assessment Act and the Provincial Land Tax Act, as amended by Bill 152.

Subject to all necessary approvals, the ministry's goal would be to have the new act and regulations in force by early 2008.
