College Introduction

In Ontario, the regulation of health professions is based on a self-governance model. There are 23 health regulatory colleges governing 25 health professions under the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 (RHPA) and their respective health profession Acts.

Under the RHPA and the Respiratory Therapy Act, 1991, the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario (CRTO) is responsible for governing the self-regulating profession of respiratory therapy in Ontario.

Under these Acts, the CRTO is authorized under section 12(1)(a) of the Respiratory Therapy Act, 1991 to make regulations prescribing those procedures below the dermis that a respiratory therapists is authorized to perform. This regulation is subject to the prior review by the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care and the approval of the Lieutenant Governor in Council.

Summary

The CRTO amended Part VII (Prescribed Procedures) of O. Reg. 596/94 (General) made under the Respiratory Therapy Act, 1991 to:
- Align the regulation with current practice,
- Make technical corrections to the provisions, and
- Provide clarity to members by removing the ?added? procedures category and consolidating all of the procedures into two existing categories ('advanced' and 'basic') to reflect evolutionary changes in the practice of respiratory therapy.
