Summary of Regulation

The CDTO amended its QA regulation under the Dental Technology Act, 1991 to ensure that the CDTO's QA program and QA regulation align with the new QA provisions of the Code, which is Schedule 2 to the RHPA.

The Code requires all health regulatory Colleges to make a regulation prescribing a quality assurance program that includes specified components, such as continuing education, professional development, and self, peer and practice assessments.

The CDTO removed existing provisions, such as those relating to the remediation of behavior and remarks of a sexual nature, which the QA Committee is no longer authorized to address as a result of the amendments to the QA provisions of the Code. All issues of this nature are now considered by the Inquiries, Complaints and Reports Committee, which determines if an allegation of sexual abuse should be referred to the Discipline Committee.

The QA program applies to all members of the CDTO who hold general certificates of registration. The QA program includes, among other things, the following components:
- mandatory requirements for members to maintain records of their self-assessment, continuing education and professional development activities, and to provide these records at the request of the CDTO;
- a peer and practice assessment component that is designed to monitor and identify any area(s) of a member's knowledge, skill and judgment that are unsatisfactory; and
- remediation of a member whose knowledge, skill and judgment is found to be unsatisfactory as a result of a peer and practice assessment.
