Summary of Decision:
The Minister approved the amendment to the existing Minister’s Regulation governing HOV lane use (O.R. 620/05) to permit eligible electric vehicles with a single occupant access to the HOV lanes for a 5 year period.

Under the regulation, eligible electric vehicles are ones that have attached valid number plates that are issued by the Ministry, have green lettering on a white background and displays the words ‘Green Vehicle’ or ‘Vehicule Ecologique’. This regulation will be revoked on July 1, 2015.

Summary of Proposal:
The Ministry of Transportation is proposing to amend the High Occupancy Vehicle Regulation (620-05) to run a 5-year pilot program allowing single-occupant, eligible electric vehicles access to the HOV lanes if they are registered and plated with “green vehicle” licence plates.

Ontario recently committed to supporting the emerging electric vehicles market entry. This pilot program will promote electric vehicles as a mode of personal transportation.
