Summary of Proposal:
The Ministry of Health (ministry) is proposing to amend Ontario Regulation 107/96 (Controlled Acts) made under the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991, to exempt respiratory therapists from the prohibition on the controlled act of applying soundwaves for diagnostic ultrasound when acting under the order of a physician or nurse practitioner.
The application of soundwaves is a non-invasive tool used by regulated health professions including respiratory therapists to check for fluid in the lungs and to assess the ideal placement of chest tubes and catheters. The amendment would clarify what authority respiratory therapists must apply soundwaves for the purposes of diagnostic ultrasound.
