Summary of Proposal:
The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care is proposing to amend Regulation 965 (Hospital Management) made under the Public Hospitals Act. The proposal would enable nurse practitioners to admit and discharge hospital in-patients.

Enabling nurse practitioners to admit and discharge hospital in-patients would provide Ontario's hospitals with a new health provider option for their admission and discharge planning. Hospitals would determine whether nurse practitioner admitting and discharging is appropriate for their organization.

To support hospitals in determining whether and how they may choose to utilize this new option, the ministry is proposing a staged approach to implementation such that discharging by nurse practitioners would be available to hospitals on July 1, 2011 and admitting on July 1, 2012.

These changes would make better use of our health human resources. For Ontarians this would mean increased access to care, reduced wait times and improved delivery of patient-centred care.
