Ontario's gift card rules - found in Ontario Regulation 17/05 under the Consumer Protection Act, 2002 - have been updated to clarify that they:
• Do not apply to gift cards issued by certain financial institutions;
• Apply to gift cards, even if they are not purchased as gifts; and,
• Apply to reloadable gift cards.

Summary of Proposal:
The Ministry of Government and Consumer Services is seeking feedback on proposed changes to the Consumer Protection Act Regulation 17/05 rules for gift cards. Specifically, the proposed changes would:

• Clarify that the gift card rules do not apply to pre-paid credit cards
• Clarify that the rules cover reloadable gift cards and situations when cards are not a gift
