Past Proposals
The Ontario government has developed a discussion paper to inform the development of a greenhouse gas cap-and-trade program for the province. This paper builds on an initial discussion paper released by the province in December 2008 and posted on the Environmental Registry for public comment.

On May 27, 2009, the Ontario government introduced Bill 185, the Environmental Protection Amendment Act (Greenhouse Gas Emissions Trading), 2009, that if passed, would support Ontario’s ability to develop a cap-and-trade program for greenhouse gases that can be integrated with other systems.

The Green Energy and Green Economy Act, 2009 and the proposed content of the new regulations represent a key pillar in supporting the development of Ontario’s green economy. The proposed approach is based on sound science and will improve the environmental approval process for renewable energy projects, which will be protective of human health and the environment.
