As a part of the government's commitment to implement all of the recommendations of the Walkerton Inquiry, and to implement the source protection framework set out by the Clean Water Act, 2006, the government is developing regulations under the Act to support the development and implementation of source protection plans across the province.

After extensive consultation the Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves Act was introduced in Ontario's Legislature on October 25, 2005. The act was passed the Legislature on June 19, 2006 and received Royal Assent on June 20, 2006. Before Ontario's Cabinet puts this new act into effect by proclaiming it, a new set of regulations has to be approved.

New standards are being proposed under the Nutrient Management Regulation (O. Reg. 267/03) under the Nutrient Management Act for optional on-farm treatment technologies and practices for anaerobic digesters and vegetative filter strip systems.
