The Government of Ontario is introducing new, more stringent requirements for flushing and testing of drinking water taps in schools, day nurseries and private schools. Previously, schools, day nurseries and private schools under O. Reg 173/03 were required to flush their water systems once per week and guidance had been provided to flush daily if elevated lead in drinking water is a potential concern.

MOE is proposing to amend O.Reg 419/05 to introduce new or updated standards for 15 substances. In addition, other amendments are also proposed that include: an update of the regional meteorological data and regulatory models; provisions for opacity; the consideration of receptors when assessing odour-based standards; and other administrative amendments.

After extensive consultation the Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves Act was introduced in Ontario's Legislature on October 25, 2005. The act was passed the Legislature on June 19, 2006 and received Royal Assent on June 20, 2006. Before Ontario's Cabinet puts this new act into effect by proclaiming it, a new set of regulations has to be approved.

New standards are being proposed under the Nutrient Management Regulation (O. Reg. 267/03) under the Nutrient Management Act for optional on-farm treatment technologies and practices for anaerobic digesters and vegetative filter strip systems.

Regulation 903 as amended to O. Reg. 128/03 made under the Ontario Water Resources Act (OWRA), sets out minimum standards for the construction and proper decommissioning of all types of wells. If implemented, the proposed amendments to Regulation 903 would improve clarity and enforceability of the regulation and build on amendments made to the regulation in 2003.

Annual Update of Occupational Exposure Limits

The Ontario Ministry of the Environment (MOE) has identified the need to develop and/or update air quality standards for priority contaminants. The Ministry's Standards Plan (PA9E0004) (released in October, 1996 and revised November, 1999), identified candidate substances for the development of air standards. Priorities were identified based on a number of considerations including toxicity, the potential for exposure and the quantity of air emissions in Ontario.
